How Long After Rotator Cuff Surgery Can You Sleep in a Bed?

A common question people ask about rotator cuff surgeries is how long till I can sleep in a bed?

You should sleep in your bed immediately after surgery and the night after surgery. I completely disagree with the idea that you should sleep in a recliner. I don’t know where that came from or why it has been passed down to the generations. It makes no sense to me, whatsoever.

I recommend people lie on their backs with one or two pillows. So you’re up about 30 degrees and then some pillows underneath your arm, and then you can roll into that whatever you want. That’s the best way to sleep.

I’ve had surgery on my shoulder. That worked for me and many of our patients, but I want you to find out whatever position is comfortable.

Now, if you want to sleep in a recliner, go ahead. But most people want to sleep in their bed. So I tell patients to find out whatever position is comfortable. You can sleep on the shoulder, you can not sleep on it, whatever you want to do.

Just figure out whatever’s comfortable for you and get some sleep. You need to sleep in whatever way you can, but you won’t damage it by lying on it or sleeping in your bed.
