Can you go home the same day after shoulder replacement surgery? Yes, you can, which is awesome.
We have been doing this for a long time. Initially, we did it with private patients because Medicare wouldn’t allow us to. But this year, they’ve changed the guidelines so that we can do Medicare patients and outpatients. So, 99% of our shoulder replacements go home.
It’s a quick procedure for us. We do it through a small incision and lose minimal blood. We do a long-acting nerve block, so you feel nothing after surgery, and the procedure takes less than 30 minutes—so small incision, less than 30 minutes, no pain. Why would you stay the night at the hospital? It makes no sense. We let you move your arm right away too.
We do these as outpatients 99% of the time. The only situations are when someone is sick, has a lot of other medical issues, or is in a wheelchair. But other than that, almost everyone goes home now.
