Will Shoulder Replacement Get Rid of Arthritis?

Will shoulder replacement get rid of arthritis? The answer is absolutely yes.

When you replace a shoulder, you’re going in and putting in a new ball—a metal ball and a plastic socket. Where you had bone-on-bone arthritis, we tell people, “Just imagine a car with no tires that are worn down, and you’re riding on the rims. So there’s no padding in the joint.”

We put in a nice smooth metal and plastic joint so it glides nicely and slowly. We’re taking out the arthritic joint by taking away little cuts of bone to put in the implant. Unlike bone-on-ball grinding, you have smooth metal and plastic, which de-stresses your shoulder.

It makes everything spread out all the load and the forces much more systematically so that you don’t have nearly as much pain as before.
