This is what I’ve spent my entire life trying to figure out how to do as a shoulder specialist.

In general, if you’re getting some aches and pains when you’re working out, I think the first thing to do is just pay attention to what you’re doing and try to modify your activities. What hurts? What doesn’t?

Still, try to exercise as best you can without irritating your shoulder. Make sure you follow healthy anti-inflammatory principles, which we have tons of videos on our website discussing. But the biggest thing is just trying to stay active but modify yourself. If that doesn’t work after a couple of weeks and you just kind of let it ride, you can take NSAIDs, you can use ice, those types of things.

It’s a good idea to come in and see us and get a diagnosis. We can figure out how to treat it. But the first step is figuring out what the problem is. It’s hard for someone who doesn’t specialize in this to understand what the problem is with the shoulder because it is a relatively complex joint, and a lot is going on there.
