How Long Are You Immobilized After Shoulder Surgery?

A lot of this depends on the surgeon that you see. We’re all different.

In my practice, we are much more focused on early motion and activity. Looking at our outcomes and data, we’ve had better success, allowing people to move their arms quickly.

When establishing your post-operative routine, understanding how to manage your sling and movement is a critical component of your recovery timeline. For patients undergoing a same day shoulder surgery, 99% of the surgeries I perform—which is my entire practice focus—allow for an accelerated approach. We give people slings, but we also say to get out of that sling as soon as possible. If you don’t wear it, don’t ever wear it.

But I want active arm use in all these. This motion allows you to do what you need each day without fear of damaging the surgery. That goes for replacements, rotator cuff repairs, and instability surgery.

As a dedicated Shoulder Surgeon in Dallas, I allow full active motion of the shoulder to do daily activities immediately for those three procedures. So that makes patients’ lives way easier in the first six weeks to two months and gets their shoulders better faster.
